In Defense of the Powder Room

The smallest room a guest will ever use alone still deserves the studio's full attention.

The powder room is the smallest room a guest will ever see alone. No one lingers in a primary suite with a stranger's eyes on it, but everyone, at some point in an evening, closes that door for thirty seconds by themselves.

It is tempting to treat it as an afterthought, leftover square footage between a hallway and a stair. We treat it as an opportunity instead. A single sconce, placed for the face rather than the room. A rough stone wall that photographs matte in bright light and rewards close attention. A mirror weighted with heavier material than it needs, because a small object handled well says more than a large one done quickly.

None of this is about impressing anyone. It is about consistency: the same standard applied whether we are pouring a foundation or hanging a single arched mirror above a marble sink. A house that is careful in its smallest room is usually careful everywhere else too. Guests tend to notice, even if they couldn't say why.
